Fantasy Folk-Electronica. Modern music for your ancient & magical soul.

Where has the time gone?

I can't believe how much has happened since my last update! After winning the Wildcard Chart on theaudience.co.nz in May, I was able to use the winnings to pay for the recording of my next single 'Fire' along with shooting a stunning music video - both of which will be released October 16th!

In between the recording and the video shoot, we packed up our house in Beachlands and moved to Raglan.  We have built a completely off-grid home that is powered by solar and wind, and it's the realization of a dream we have had for years. This place is so beautiful and very inspiring for new songs!  I do find myself spending a lot of time chatting with cows and sheep these days, and I'm fairly sure my husband was introducing the seedlings to each other as he planted our veggie patch.  Perhaps we need to get out more.

Just before moving, I went on a tour of the lower North Island and had great fun playing in venues and living rooms all over.  I absolutely loved it, and I can see more touring on the horizon for sure.  I feel like the last few months of 2015 are going to be the busiest yet, and I'm ready for it!  I've put some live footage from the tour up on my YouTube channel so flick on over and check them out (and please subscribe!).

Feb / March 2015

Wowsers trousers have I been busy!  On Feb 12th I had a video release party and it was SO much fun and you can watch the Official music video for "Did You Hear?" right here!  There is also some behind the scenes footage on my youtube channel if you're into that sort of thing.  I played  about five songs live with a wonderfully talented violinist and guitarist and it was awesome.  Since then the video's views has exceed my initial goal, I've been featured in the NZ Sunday News, and I'll be performing live on 95bFM radio in Auckland next week!  Fingers crossed that it all works out, but if I can raise enough dough I'm planning to head to The Lab Recording Studio in late March to begin work on some new music for ya!

Music video for 'Did You Hear?' is finished - watch trailer here!

This is a trailer for my very first music video, which will be released in NZ on the 12th Feb, 2015.  I am so excited that the radio show 'Homegrown with Jon E' will be doing an exclusive pre-release!  I'm submitting it to the music TV stations so fingers crossed that we get some airplay!  How cool would that be?  Just casually... oh yes, that's my video on TV...totally normal, la dee da.

Music Inform feature

I've got some very good company on this music discovery site!  I've found some really great music from the featured bands / artists, one of which is called The Friendly Beasts.  So I'm pretty stoked that I was the first artist to be featured there in 2015!

Radioflote internet radio

I was contacted via Facebook after my ReverbNation feature by a lovely lady who invited me to be on Radioflote, which was pretty cool! It's quite a cool site but I haven't really figured out how it works yet.  But it was exciting to be asked, and here's the link:

Music video coming soon!!

This is something really exciting!  We're more than halfway through filming a music video for the title track of the EP, and it is going to be so flipping good.  There are some great behind-the-scenes photos on Facebook so come check it out, and you might as well give it a "like" whilst you're there right?  I can't wait to share the final version with you!

Top 5 Things I Learned at Going Global 2014

Top 5 things I learned at the Going Global Music Summit 2014

Going Global is an annual conference aimed at developing and nurturing New Zealand’s growing music industry, and it grants attendees access to an incredible panel of industry leaders across radio, management, labels, publishing, media, festivals, and much more.  I was lucky enough to attend this year, and here are some of the golden nuggets that I took away from it as a self-managed artist.

1. Verify your accounts

Stick your release on Soundcloud, Spotify, or Youtube and think it will be found?  Turns out, the internet shows preference to accounts that are ‘verified’ and if you do this across all platforms playing your music, your online visibility will increase tremendously.  Verification is a manual process, unfortunately, but worth doing if you want to be easily found.

2. Metadata

This topic, whilst excruciatingly boring, is critical to finding and maximising your fanbase.  Getting your head around who is listening to and sharing your music (and where, when, etc) is crucial to targeting effective promotional campaigns.  Google it for more details, it's worth it.

3. Do your homework

The people in decision making roles within the music industry are inundated with emails every day, and they appreciate it when the message is personalised or shows that you have done your research on them and have targeted them specifically rather than included them in a scatter gun approach.  We all like to feel a bit special in that way, right?

4. Listicles

What, you say, is a listicle?  Thank you for asking.  Increasingly, we find it hard to commit to reading a full article, so lists are a great way to get your content across concisely.  Think ‘Top 5 Ways to be More Awesome’ or ‘Top 10 New Words I Learned Over the Weekend, Including Listicle,’ for example.

5. Be Yourself

As cliché as this sounds, don’t be afraid to let your personality show.  The first thing we want to do when we hear a great song is to learn more about the band, so make it easy for your growing audience to learn about you.  Visuals are really important, and high quality recordings that best represent your skills are key to getting noticed, but the most important thing is that you are genuine or else it just won't connect.

There was so much valuable information provided over the weekend, and if you are an artist trying to break into the industry this is an event you should not miss.  The link is http://www.goingglobal.co.nz for more information.  Thanks for reading, and please share or comment if you found this useful!

Embrace the Garth

I recently had the honour of being featured in a publication from my high school about graduates finding success in the arts, which was awesome!  There was a large photo, a lovely write-up, and when it arrived in print I had a moment of feeling like I was fifteen again and finally sitting at the “cool table.”

But I had a comical reality check right around the same time, when I received a Facebook message from one of my former classmates.  It went something like, “I just don’t recognise you from any of your photos, but judging from our mutual friends we must have attended high school together? Who are you?”

Amazingly, I was immediately transported to fifteen again.

The reality is that, without a village of hair and makeup helpers, I don’t naturally look like a Parabola West photo.  Back in high school, before I discovered make up and over-accessorising, my look was probably more like Garth from Wayne’s World.  Of course this person didn’t recognise me!

High school can be a tough time for creative types.  We tend to blossom a bit later in life!  Luckily I went to a school that valued the arts and gave me an outlet for all of that awkward teen angst.  It was truly the best place for me at the time.

The moral of the story is:

Don’t get too caught up in Image, and embrace the funny moments that keep you grounded!

First published review in NZMusician Magazine

Oh thank goodness.  Putting my debut out there for critical review by a complete stranger who judges music for a living was certainly frightening - it could have gone badly and that would have been highly embarrassing.  But the review was lovely and encouraging, and very generous in its musical comparisons (I mean...Tori Amos, Adele, Sarah McLaughlan? I died. This is pretty much my playlist right there...it was just ridiculously awesome).   So here it is, from the June/July issue of NZMusician Magazine!
